Zeiterion Performing Arts Center

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center stands as New Bedford's premier venue for live entertainment. Built in 1923, this historic theater hosts over 150 performances each year, including Broadway shows, classical music concerts, comedy acts, and dance performances.

 

The venue seats 762 people in an intimate setting. Gold leaf details and restored architectural features create an elegant atmosphere. The theater books national touring acts alongside local performing arts groups.

 

Visitors can attend shows year-round, with a particularly strong lineup during the fall and spring seasons. The Zeiterion also offers educational programs and community events throughout the year.

 

New Bedford Art Museum

The New Bedford Art Museum operates in a former bank building in the heart of downtown. The museum displays contemporary art installations, exhibits from local artists, and pieces from the city's art collection on loan from the New Bedford Free Public Library.

Many pieces created through ArtWorks! programs appear in public spaces around New Bedford. The organization partners with schools and community groups to expand access to arts education.

 

New Bedford Seaport Cultural District

The New Bedford Seaport Cultural District stretches along the waterfront and includes galleries, studios, shops, and performance venues. This designated cultural district drives economic growth while preserving the city's artistic character.

 

Monthly AHA! nights take place on the second Thursday of each month. During these events, galleries and museums open their doors for free programming, live music, and community celebrations. Each month features a different theme.

 

The Seaport Art Walk runs from July through October along the waterfront and Pier 3. Visitors can view outdoor sculptures and murals free of charge. The district includes artist collectives like TL6 Gallery, Gallery X, and Interwoven, which sell original works from local creators.

 

Acushnet Avenue runs through the district and features authentic Portuguese restaurants, bakeries, and shops that reflect the city's cultural heritage. The Kilburn Mill at Clarks Cove houses dozens of artist studios and galleries within a single complex.
